"Magic, eh?" He tugged at the leather to make sure the keys were secure, "Mebbe's we'll find out what they're for when we get back t' the keep".He turned around to see what progress the others were making in gathering the loot to be met with the sight of Throgbur emptying the sacks out onto the grass. "Are ye simple?!" he yelled at the half-orc, "We need t' get movin' an' you're just makin' more work!" Zeric moved in to head Cathmhaol off, before he reached Throgbur, " I shall sort him out, Cathmhaol. He's my brother and I know the most effective way to get him motivated." He walked over to Throgbur, and grabbed the big half-orc by the ear, " I need a word, My Brother!" he announced loudly, before switching to a much lower tone and making hand gestures as though berating Throgbur. " Throgbur. I will buy you beer upon our return to Daggerford if you listen carefully. There is something in that pile of junk that I want. What it is does not concern you. However, I do not wish the others to know about it. It is sorceror's business only. You understand? Now, lower your head as though I'm giving you the row of your life. Good." He gestured to the piles of items on the ground, " Now, that hairy oaf wants you to pick up all these things and put them back in the sacks. I suggest we comply. You should start with that pile there. I will help you." He pointed to a pile. He placed a hand on his brother's shoulder, the closest anyone had seen to affection from the strangely-matched twins, " Do not worry, my brother. Remember the oath... We are forbidden to discuss it. And there's an end to it. With this item, we shall be one step closer to being free of them and to gaining vengeance upon those who have marked me. Trust me." With that, he began helping Throgbur pick up the mess on the ground, carefully palming the ring he had spotted thanks to the fortuitous spell.

Date : Ches the 2nd, Year of the the Rogue Dragons (1373 D.R.) Location : Cromm's Hold Time : late afternoon
The journey back to Cromm's Hold is relatively uneventful, the path is relatively easy to follow and with the assistance of Zeric's flying familiar its rather difficult to get lost. On the odd occasion you have gone the incorrect way. A lizard men dressed in red, will surface from the swamp next to the path and impart some information, such as, "Go thisss way. Nosssing around thisss bend." The lizard man then disappears. Arriving back at Cromm's Hold the Baron's wife, Lucretia, shouts "You're back, you're back. Did you find him? His Ring?"OOC- there has been some talk of a keep in Cromm's but its more a manor house and a stockade, both of which are currently burned to the ground. If you look at the map its the large-ish building by the crossroads. Theres also a small Inn here called the Robin's Nest, again pretty much ransacked by the Lizard Men' attack.
The map is on the Map Thread elegantuniverse.proboards98.com/index.cgi?board=maps&action=display&thread=1170285525

OOC: Oops!
Cathmhaol looked around at the others and realised that it fell to him to tell the Baron's wife, ... rather widow, the news. "I ... I'm afraid we were too late to save yer husband," he said, surprisingly tenderly. As the woman dissolved into tears before him and her lady-in-waiting rushed forward to console her, Cathmhaol felt an unusual feeling of helplessness.
Resolving to try give something back to the poor woman he wheeled around on the party. "Well," he hissed, "Who's got the Baron's ring?"

Helping his brother as instructed, Throgbur did as he was bid. His brother was ever fond of secrets and plots and scheming so maybe this was another of his little projects. He went about his work methodically, plodding along, plotting the demise of Cathmhaol in his head...

Zeric stepped forward, hefting one of the sack, " There was no ring on the Lizardmen corpses we found, Milady. It may be that it is among their plunder, which they seemed to be arguing over. And then again, it may be lost to the swamp - some of the beast fled afore we could slay them all..." OOC: Oops! Now.... regrets...? Ah well, she won't need it as she's not the Baron and her son's dead. Maybe I'll come back and claim the place for myself in a few years!! Hey, Throgbur! How do you fancy a very important job? Captain of the Baron's guard? I might even pay you!!

The Baroness looked dismayed, then sighed "Dont worry, I just wanted to know that he was dead and gone. MY poor husband was always very rash."
Turning to Cathmhaol "Captain? Commander? What is your title?" She smiled like an idea had just occured to her through her tears. "Would you like a title? Id like you and your patrol to stay here permanently. The chance of Lizard folk attack looks to have increased adn we will need your protection. Your men and lady have done us proud. Is there any more people that youd like?"
As she finished a familiar face apears in teh crowd "Sir! Sir! Couldnt find a horse sir, so I walked here! I havent missed all the action, have I?" said the youthful Garri

"It's ... ah ... sergeant, Ma'am," said Cathmhaol, "Me an' authority ne'er got on well enough for me t' go further". He swallowed hard, "If'n ye still want us though, I'll ask the lads if they're up for it". The mute plea in the Baroness's red-rimmed eyes was answer enough.
Cathmhaol stepped away from the Baroness and summoned the troop to him with a wave of his hand. "Ye've acquitted yerselves well today an' I'll write to the lieutenant an' tell 'im that but my word's not got much weight wi' that pompous tit".
He looked them in the eye, one by one, "Ye want t' go back to Patrol 13; guardin' the pig sty when the fayre's in town in case someone fancies some free bacon? Or d' ye want to stay here an' make a name for yerselves?"
"Well, what's it t' be, lads and lasses?"

Zeric looked around at the keep, "Well, Sergeant Cathmhaol, the lodgings leave something to be desired, but I think they will be adequate... I wonder if this place has a library...?"
He wandered off, moving over to the Baroness, "Milady, Baroness, I too am sorry for your loss. I wonder if the Baron kept a library? There may be something in the older texts relating to lizardmen and the most effective ways to vanquish them."

"If its a question of lodgings, we have a number of empy houses after the raid. I can give you one of those in the short term. Until you can build your own or whatever youd like? Yes the Keep has seen better days, but Im sure with the help of the dwarves in Daggerford we can build it better. " She mused "A library? Not really he was never one for reading but he does have a number of books on the history of the lizard folk, something he was very interested in."

Turning back to Cathmhaol "Sergeant,Ill be travelling to Daggerford in the morning. Id like your men to accompany me there. Ill be speaking to the Duke on your behalf to free you and your men from the control of the Militia. I want you to work as independants, stayng here to protect the land. Maybe we can get some others to assist and allow you to operate independently. Do you know of anyone?"

"We need to travel back as well, Ma'am, so we'd be honoured to accompany ye!" said Cathmhaol. "As for more troops, ha' ye any young lads here who're lookin' for a military career?"
He looked around at the available houses. "That'un I think", he said, "Looks pretty solid and those windows on the upper floor gi' a good view 'cross the 'Hold".
He turned around to look at Garri who had been slouching against a nearby tree, "Here's yer first recruit, Ma'am. This wee fella has burnt his bridges with the Lieutenant in Daggerford so he's signin' up here whether he likes it or not". He nodded in the direction of the house he had chosen, "Get that checked out, youngster!"

"I need a pardon m'aam" said the youngster, "Theyll throw me in jail, y'know."
"Ill speak to the Duke, young man, Il speak to th Duke on your behalf." replied the Baroness.

Throgbur scratched his head when posed with the question of his future. In the end, he plumped for the certainty of wise guidance. Plopping one hand on his brother's shoulder, the Half-Orc towering over the rest of the group, he nodded.
"Zeric speaks for Throgbur." and stuck his thumbs in his belt.

Zeric shrugged, which had the added bonus of displacing his brother's hand from his shoulder, "I would like to stay here, Cathmhaol. I believe there is much to be learned about the lizardmen from the tomes the Baronness mentioned. And it would be nice to get out from under that lieutenant's beady eyes, wouldn't it?"
