Targets: Up to five creatures, no two of which can be more than 15 ft. apart.Pretty straightforward, eh? So why did one of my gaming group last week (playing a first level mage) insist that she had five missiles at first level ... It took about ten minutes (and a bit of a mardy huff) before she would back down and settle for muttering how crap first level mages are ...

Isnt that the point? That magic users are rubbish to start with, look at the coardly antics of Zeric in the adventure, but get more powerful as they get on in levels. Otherwise there wouldnt be a downside to playing one would there?

Aye, the player's not helping herself though by multi-classing. Verrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrryyyyy slow experience progression ....

LOL - Which is where third ed tops second ed. You go up a level, you choose a class. You just get penalised for taking too many classes or having them to far apart in levels.

I'm not entirely convinced by the levelling for multi-classes in 3rd Ed.
1000 points for your next level? Fine. SHIT loads of points for your first level in an alternate class if you take it later? That blows.
But yeah it does kinda stop the multiclass munchkins.

I think any change of class HAS to be roleplayed. I mean a fighter cant just become a Wizard, without putting in a number of months (years) training. Or a theif or whatever. But it does simpify things somewhat.

Not this time. 'Mardy' is the local expression for stroppy or grumpy. Besides, if it were a spoonerism, that would 'hardy muff' ...
