Milo looks confused by the question. "Well all I know is the same as everybody else. The Mad Mage made this place as a joke or as a test and it changes around a lot. Portals, traps and even walls can move from visit to visit. He tends to be a bit sporting and not move stuff around on people and some of the main landmarks often stay as they are but occasionally things just disappear. There was the tale of Sivilis the Stealthy, she was exploring 20 feet in front of the party when she turned around and noticed they'd all disappeared - a portal had opened after she'd gone by and the rest were thrown who knows where!
Most portals have a trigger or a reason so sometimes if you do the same thing again you'll get ported as well. Sometimes there is a trinket that disables the portal but maybe only after some people have already gone through. Other trinkets open up portals. No parties agree on how treasure should be handled - should one person carry it and risk being pulled through a portal, or should it be spread out, or even should it be left behind for collection once the area appears safe.
Of course not all portals have the one destination - some of them have a cycle of destinations they switch between, others are just random and of course some have been in collapses or explosions or trapped so nobody can survive going through anyway.
If we try to repeat what he did we might be able to trigger the portal again. Of course if we all try at the same then all we'll know is if somebody disappears. If only one person searches they can explain before trying something so everybody else can follow but that can take so long you're too late to help your friend."
Milo pauses and thinks for a while before suddenly piping up "Or it could be an illusion instead. I disbelieve, I disbelieve, I disbelieve" he chants as he jumps up and down in the doorway with his eyes closed.

Cathmhaol's knuckles whitened as he gripped the hilt of the sword, trying to resist the temptation to lay Milo out. "Enough!" he barked at the capering halfing. "Keeping yer yammerin' t' yersel'".
He scowled around the room, glanced at Zeric then back at Milo. "Let me get this straight," he said, "If'n we do exactly what Dace did, we could end up where he is, aye?"

I was studying the Dragon Cult painting." He looked around the room, looking for anything unusual that Dace might have focused his attention on, for instance, perhaps a loose piece of masonry that might trigger a secret passageway, or a trigger mechanism for some other device. |

He grabs the door handle and pulls the door shut before once again opening it and stepping through the doorway. Looking momentarily glum by that failure to resolve the puzzle he says "Hmm, oh I see what you mean, does the portal need a trigger? Well not necessarily or it could be anything. The first person to walk through, the first living thing, the first male, the first human, and so on and so on. The possibilities for a trained mind are almost infinite. It's why so few can attain the level of learning required to truly master magic as opposed to merely applying it in a day to day way." |

"Ho! Now it's quiet, I've a mind to go expolre the rest of this place..." the grin on his face and the gleam in his eye clearly indicate that he is joking...
"Now, what did that sprout of a hobnailed boot do again?" says the dwarf as he also closes the door, uses the handle to open it and steps through the doorway...
