Zeric said in his usual diplomatic fashion, " Shouldn't we finish checking out the rest of this building before we get settled in for the night? " After hearing the reply, he announced the guard rota, " Three shifts, divided into equal time periods, from now until tomorrow at dawn. First shift: Myself and Rumbleskin; second, Eneval and Dace; third will be Cathmhaol and Delora. Questions?" OOC: No offense to Rumblie and Eneval, but this rota ensures none of the new guys are on guard alone.... It's not that we don't fully trust you, but we don't fully trust you yet... ;D Once bitten, twice shy and all that

Pausing from his sleep Eneval turned and nodded in agreement.
I am very happy to join your shifts my friends. I am in no way ready for sleep though so will happily help you cover the first shift.
I have checked upstairs before your arrival, it is empty.

"No offense," said Cathmhaol, "but I'd rather someone took a second look." He looked at Dace and Delora and nodded towards the stairs.

Nodding at Cathmhaol, Dace sprinted upstairs and checked every room.

<Rumbleskin>
Rumbleskin blinked at how quickly things had progressed around him:
"Well, if ye be wantin' tae split yon Elf and me, Oil happily take secon' watch with Dace - assumin' he nae have any objections?
"After all, as it apears oi been sleepin' fer best part o' three cen'uries, what's one broken night?"

Zeric turned to Rumbleskin, " No. Absolutely no objection whatsoever. I mean, it is not as though I strained my considerable intellect to create such a finely-crafted guard rota, is it now?" He shrugged, resigned to the change, " Besides, the elf does not smell so... stale." OOC: Now, that's more like Zeric!

Eneval watched the activity, reflecting on the nature of this group he had met. What was his purpose here? why had the goddess chosen for him to become involved with such an unusual group of rag tags?
Frowning at Cathmhaol Eneval commented , "I understand that you clearly have been given reasons not to trust people but I'm afraid I do take some offence. I am not such urchin from the woods and, more importantly I am a child of Angharradh - we not lie"

Dace returned from upstairs, met Cathmhaol's gaze and gave a very slight shake of the head to indicate everything was clear.
OOC:
I'm assuming Dace is gone a minute or so, but if you think he'd hear the Elf's piece just then, can you let me know? Ta.

Frowning at Cathmhaol Eneval commented , "I understand that you clearly have been given reasons not to trust people but I'm afraid I do take some offence. I am not such urchin from the woods and, more importantly I am a child of Angharradh - we not lie"Zeric retorted to the elf's remark, " We have lost many a good companion and valuable ally through the betrayal we have sufferred in yonder caverns. Vane Harumpthal, cleric of Kelemvor, gutted like a swine. Garrion the quick, militiaman of Daggerford and trusted member of this Company, slain in the prime of his youth. Aribella, a paladin we encountered within the caverns, who stood firm to allow us to escape and continue the fight against this "Ssakathka's" machinations. Bregl, a bard of some renown, who also most valiantly held of the drow horde and bought us the opportunity to foil the Lizard King. Bought it at the cost of blood, Eneval." Zeric shook his head in disbelief, " We, The Company of the Dagger, who once numbered twelve brave souls, are now reduced to but two of the original members: Cathmhaol, our commander, who bears the losses silently, though 'tis plain that they tear his very being in grief. Each loss is like the loss of a brother to him. Now 'tis only Cathmhaol and myself..." He held the elf's gaze, " We have replaced some of our losses with the hardy and courageous company you see before you... Dace, Delora and of course, Rumbleskin Ironeater... Betrayed by one of your very own race - an anathema to all that is considered normal, that an elf could turn to evil ends..." He poured another cup of wine for himself, without offering anyone else, " So, forgive us if we seem overly cautious. It is nothing personal. Deal with earning your place. Or leave... it matters not to me." He took a sip, stood and walked over to the window, " Now, if you will excuse me? I have first watch, I believe." OOC: Nothing personal. Just how Zeric likes to let off steam from time to time...

<Rumbleskin Ironeater>
Rumbleskin, realising that he is on second watch and what needed to be said had been said for this day, stakes out a far corner of teh tap room, hauls some tables and chairs into a comfortable arrangement and then calls out:
"One o' ye kick me when it's time fer me watch. I be for gettin' some kip"
Without any further ado, Rumbleskin dumps his still armoured frame onto the table, kicks his feet onto the back of a chair, rubs his beard and eyebrows with a gauntleted fist and then starts snoring...

"Ye understand now?" said Cathmhaol to Eneval, "Our kinship is born of blood an' betrayal. We ha' all earned the right t' be here by dint of our arms an' the sacrifice o' others."
His voice lost its harsh edge and his tiredness showed through, "Ye ha' not fought wi' us so we ha' no way to judge ye. Words are just that, words. Ye are welcome t' join us but it's by yer strength o arms an' steadfastness by which ye'll be judged. Take no offence from our words, ye are being treated no differently t' anyone else who has yet t' prove himself," he nodded in the direction of the sleeping Rumbleskin, "E'en he is being tested still."
Cathmhaol gathered his cloak around himself. "I'm turning in," he said to the party, "Make sure ye wake me f' my watch," and he made his way to the corner of the room where he settled down and was soon asleep.

Eneval listened an absorbed the tale of this group. After the talking had stopped he took time to consider what had been revealed and the impact that would have on the behaviour of these adventurers.
"Thank you, I better understand your behaviour and your mood my friends.
I pray the souls of your fallen will travel well and I feel the pain you have suffered.
I have earned the only place that matters to me my friends but I will happily help you and , if you need to view it that way, earn your trust."
