Hail fellows! Whilst playing in my 'real life' game last night, my PC was fireballed. 25 points of damage verses 2nd level fighter with 11 HP only resulted in one winner - and it wasn't me! Fortunately, our party NPC resurrected me (a charm left to him by his dear old mum - a GM fudge methinks, but I wasn't arguing) at which point I asked about the usual 10,000 XP for my return from the afterlife*. Only one problem, it couldn't be found in the PHB. I'm sure it's not just a house rule so can anyone point me in the right direction so I can claim my XP? *One of the other PC's was merely wounded and her player** was most put out that my death was/maybe so amply rewarded. She spent the rest of the evening either sulking or trying to put her PC in harm's way so she would get killed***...

Personally, I wouldnt give you 10,000xp for a near death experience. Id say you are lucky to be alive!!! Sorry but I cant remember anything about a bonus XP award for death! DM

I don't recall there ever being a reward for being killed. One of my D&D GMs used to give 1000 points, but I disagreed with it, personally. I hate the whole levels and experience loss situation, but alas have never ever known a good alternative. I think it's a real shitter if you lose XPs and even a level and it aint your fault, but I agree you need a penalty to make it a deterrent, but I wish there was an alternative.

My DM method is generally to keep players alive with a couple of provisos. 1. They are not stupid. Running without any regard for ones safety, into a horde of Orcs WILL result in death. Of course, a heroic death may garner you experience points. Defending the parties escape against a horde of orcs, would still end in death but Id give you loads of experience points if you can get resurected... If you can find someone to resurect you and can find the body (a quest in itslef) 2. It serves the story. Death should not be cheap.
Having said all that, I probably wont kill people due to freak die rolls, ut they might be unconsious or incapacitated or similair.

That's generally what I do, not kill people with stupid dice rolls, just if they're acting stupid or keep making stupid decisions. I've been known to off people for purposes of the story however, but generally NPCs
